SUMMARY:Civility Saves Lives Conference 16th Nov
DESCRIPTION:All medical staff and healthcare leaders are welcome to join us for a full day with Chris Turner – TED speaker and founder of Civility Saves Lives. Listen to three amazing talks about civility and how we can improve the culture of interior health. \n\n\n\nSession 1: Why Civility Matters in a Complex World \n\n\n\nHealthcare has evolved from being based solely around the individual pursuit of excellence to a practice that involves multiple healthcare professionals working together to achieve the best outcomes for patients. To do this\, we have to create environments where individuals can perform at their best and then work together as teams.  \n\n\n\nSession goals  \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand the evolution of the importance of teamwork in today’s healthcare world \n\n\n\nBe able to describe the differences between simple puzzles\, hard puzzles\, complicated and complex situations. \n\n\n\nUnderstand why equality and diversity matter at a group decision level\, but that just having diversity does not mean we have inclusivity- and what we can do about that. \n\n\n\nUnderstand the impact of incivility at a recipient\, bystander and perpetrator level. \n\n\n\nUnderstand the impact of incivility at a departmental/organisational level \n\n\n\n\nSession 2: What’s your theme tune? \n\n\n\nThis session shows the evidence for how easily we misunderstand each other\, how we fall prey to negativity bias and how\, despite our beliefs\, we are each misunderstood on a frequent basis. We shall look at the components of what contribute to our understanding of a situation and begin to think about how we can influence this\, both as someone observing others and as the one being observed.  \n\n\n\nSession goals  \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand how easy it is to be misunderstood. \n\n\n\nHave a framework to understand how various factors contribute to how we are comprehended by others. \n\n\n\nKnow some of the statistical evidence around the disparity between how much we think we understand and how much we do (on average) understand and how different communication modalities affect this. \n\n\n\nHave mechanisms to bring to play if we want to be interpreted in the positive. \n\n\n\n\nSession 3: Calling it out with compassion:\n\n\n\nFor many people\, having difficult workplace conversations is one of the most important\, unpleasant and avoided areas of leadership. In this session we shall look the essential nature of these interactions\, why we need to have them and at the evidence base for how to have these effectively. We shall learn a structure designed to minimise distress both for the recipient and also the person initiating the conversation\, leading to the best chances that they can hear the message and have the opportunity to change their behaviours.  \n\n\n\nSession goals  \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand the importance of the conversation around the perception of conduct. \n\n\n\nLearn to differentiate between retributive and restorative conversations and why this is important. \n\n\n\nHave a clear structure for who should be having the conversations. \n\n\n\nLearn a stepwise approach to having the conversation. \n\n\n\nRecognise the potential pitfalls of these conversations. \n\n\n\nDiscuss and rehearse how to put this into practice. \n\n\n\n\nAgenda for the Day\n\n\n\n\n11:15 AM – 12:15 PM Civility in a complex world\n\n\n\n12:15 PM – 1:15 PM Lunch\n\n\n\n1:15 PM – 2:15 PM What’s your theme tune\n\n\n\n2:45 PM – 3:45 PM Calling it out with compassion\n\n\n\n\nClaim CME\n\n\n\n\nCivility in the Workplace and Its Impact on Patient Care : This one (1) credit-per-hour Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to three (3) Mainpro+® credits\n\n\n\nThe University of British Columbia Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) to provide study credits for continuing medical education for physicians.
